Am I Too Old / Too Young to Get Braces?
The important thing about braces is timing. Getting the timing right means you get to wear the braces for a shorter period of time and they do their job well. So when it comes to deciding when is the right age for braces, the answer is, now!
Get the Timing Right
If you have been told that you need braces, whether you are 13 or 33, it’s time to act. Firstly, talk frankly and honestly to your dentist about your concerns if you are a little wary of getting braces. Instead of putting off the decision, try to get all the information and advice you need as soon as braces are suggested so that you have everything you need to make the right decision.
If possible, chat with someone you know who has, or used to have, braces (you’ll be able to recognize this last group by their gorgeous straight teeth and big smiles!). Then, if you decide to go for braces, do it as soon as possible to get the best out of them.
Braces for Kids
Many kids have an orthodontic check when their adult teeth come in, so it’s best to wait until then before considering braces. Don’t be tempted to wait until later – get the braces sorted out and the smile will be gorgeous for those all-important teen years. Kids’ braces are really effective as the child is still growing.
Braces for Older Kids
The best time for orthodontic treatment in young people is just before the teen years, so around 12 or 13 when you are still growing and developing. This is a great time, but it can also be a difficult time to make a change to how you look because of all the peer pressure and physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. However, if you want to have beautiful teeth going into your teen years, then this is the perfect time to get braces fitted.
Braces for adults are less common because people are under the (wrong!) impression that they won’t work or that they will look silly. Neither of these things is true – in fact, braces can work really well in your adult years and the straight teeth you get as a result can take years off your look. Rather than opting for cosmetic surgery, many people are considering braces as a way to boost their beauty safely and quickly. An adult with braces is in control of how they look and will look in the future – and that is attractive.
The bottom line is; you are never too old for braces. Forget the braces you remember from your childhood – modern braces can be almost invisible or they can be trendy and colorful. And the smile you get after a brief period with braces is just so worth it! As a child with braces, you can look forward to a life with straight gorgeous teeth for minimal effort. As a pre-teen, the thought of having a brilliant smile through those teen years is a big motivation. For adults, there is the thought of looking younger and sexier without any of the risks of cosmetic surgery. Having braces fitted when you need them is doing yourself a big favor!
